| Currently nominated for a BBC3 World Music Award this Polish trio takes their name from the Yiddish word for Krakow, and much of their inspiration from that cityís Jewish neighbourhood of Kazimierz. Over the last decade they have gained a reputation as Europes leading kiezmer outfit. Kroke live are a hair-raisingly brilliant, unforgettable experience. Jerzy Bawol creates extraordinary note-bending effects on his accordion, Tomasz Latoís bass doubles as a percussion instrument and Tomasz Kukurba switches between viola and violin, sometimes accompanying himself in eerie abstract vocalisations ñ even though their songs generally have no words. Though often intensely melancholic, their music can also be festive and playfully humorous.
